Chronology of Events at KDRI

1991

  • Founded in 1991 as a Public Corporation Institute.

1994

  • Published the first issue of the international journal “DNA Research”.
  • Started the human cDNA analysis project.

1996

  • Completed the genome sequencing of a cyanobacterium, Synechocystis sp. strain PCC6803.

1999

  • Completed the international collaborative genome project of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh..
  • Completed the genome project of a nitrogen-fixing symbiotic bacterium, Mesorhizobium loti strain MAFF303099.

2001

  • Started a project supported by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) entitled “Collaboration of Regional Entities for the Advancement of Technological Excellence”.

2002

  • The number of human genes we registered at international databases exceeded 2,000.
  • Started a project supported by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development (NEDO) entitled “Development of Fundamental Technologies for Controlling the Process of Material Production of Plants”.

2003

  • Completed the genome project of a nitrogen-fixing symbiotic bacterium, Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA110.

2006

  • Started to distribute human gene clones (Flexi ORF clones) constructed in collaboration with Promega Co. of USA.

2007

  • Established the Center for Development of Biotech Industries.

2008

  • Completed the genome project of a legume species, Lotus japonicas L.

2009

  • Completed the genome project (draft sequence) of tomato, Solanum lycopersicon L.

2010

  • Initiated promotion activities to establish a genetic examination site of intractable diseases within our institute.

2012

  • Completed the international tomato genome project to produce a high accuracy reference genome.

2013

  • Completed the genome project of cultivated strawberry, Fragaria x ananassa.
  • Completed the genome project of carnation, Dianthus caryophyllus L.

2014

  • Completed the genome project of radish, Raphanus sativus L.
  • Completed the genome project of eggplant, Solanum melongena L.

2015

  • Completed the genome project of wild sweet potato, Ipomoea trifida (H.B.K) G.Don.
  • Established a venture company as a partner of KDRI.
  • Signed a joint research agreement with the Future Medicine Education and Research Organization at Chiba University.

2016

  • Completed the genome project of ancestral species of cultivated peanut, Arachis duranensis and Arachis ipaensis.
  • Completed the genome project of zoysia-grasses.
  • Completed the genome project of buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.
  • Set up a collaborative laboratory with Chiba University.
  • Completed the genome project of quinoa, Chenopodium quinoa.
  • Completed the genome project of subterranean clover, Trifolium sp.

2017

  • Registered our institute as a hygienic inspection center for genetic testing of intractable diseases.
  • Signed an agreement of collaboration with Chiba Cancer Center Research Institute.
  • Completed the genome project of fig, Ficus carica L.
  • Completed the genome project of sweet cherry, Prunus avium L.
  • Completed the genome project of wild rose, Rosa multiflora Thunb.
  • Started genetic testing of intractable diseases.
  • Started cytological screening of lysosomal disease in newborn babies.
